    A Five-Day Chiang Mai Itinerary

    DaphneBy DaphneSeptember 3, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

Chiang Mai trades Bangkok’s frenzy for old-city temples, misty hills and one of Thailand’s best food scenes, all at prices that make it easy to linger. Plenty of travellers plan three days here and end up staying a week. A few smart choices set the whole trip up. Get the basics priced up — compare Chiang Mai hotels on Traveloka — and the rest of the planning is easy.

    Getting there

Chiang Mai International (CNX) takes direct flights from most regional hubs, and the short hop up from Bangkok is one of the cheaper legs in the region. Midweek departures tend to be the best value. On fares this is Traveloka’s home turf — the cheapest flight prices in Southeast Asia, in our experience. Weekend departures carry a premium, so start the search midweek if the calendar allows.

    A day-by-day plan

Day one, settle in and take it slow with the temples of the Old City, then find your feet over a relaxed dinner. Day two, go bigger with a morning at Doi Suthep, with plenty of street food along the way. Day three, keep exploring at a gentler pace with an ethical elephant sanctuary day trip. Day four, venture a little further afield to the Sunday Walking Street market. Day five, wind down with a hands-on Thai cooking class before you head home.

    Where to stay

The moated Old City puts you within walking distance of the main temples and night markets; Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) is the trendy cafe-and-boutique district; and quieter riverside stays line the Ping. Traveloka is where we book beds in this part of the world; best OTA in SEA, and the hotel prices back it up. Rooms at the good end of the market disappear on weekends, so don’t leave it to the day.

    Where to eat

Work through khao soi, sai ua sausage and sticky rice at the markets, and don’t miss the Sunday Walking Street stalls. The northern curries are milder and richer than the south’s. The cheap end of the menu is where the cooking is, so don’t over-plan your meals.

    Getting around

The Old City is walkable, and songthaews (the red shared trucks) plus ride-hailing cover everywhere else cheaply. Rent a scooter only if you’re confident in the hill traffic. Sort out getting around on day one and the rest is straightforward.

    Plan by area

Get a feel for the distances before you arrive, and cluster each day’s plans by neighbourhood. It’s the simplest way to see more of Chiang Mai and waste less time getting from one thing to the next.

    A little courtesy

Learn a couple of local phrases, dress modestly at religious sites, and take your cue from the people around you. Small gestures make Chiang Mai friendlier and smooth over the little moments.

    Leave room to wander

Resist the urge to over-schedule. The best memories of Chiang Mai are usually the unplanned ones, so leave gaps for a long lunch, a wrong turn, or an afternoon that happily runs late.

    The practical bit

Nail the basics and the trip runs itself. Fix your dates, compare Chiang Mai hotels on Traveloka, and everything else about Chiang Mai falls into place.
